An Origin Omen? Show'em Who's King Delivers Timely Win for Billy Slater
Queensland coach Billy Slater is celebrating an early victory this week after part-owned gelding Show'em Who's King dug deep to break his maiden at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
With the State of Origin decider just days away, Maroons fans might be hoping the win is a good sign of things to come. While we'll leave the football to Billy, there was no doubting the fighting spirit shown by Show'em Who's King as he produced a courageous performance to open his winning account under Jasper Franklin.
Having put together four consistent performances to begin his career, the gelding was rewarded for his persistence with a well-deserved maiden victory that highlighted both his grit and staying potential.
With the rail positioned well out, race tactics were always going to be crucial. Rather than conceding too much ground from the start, Jasper took bad luck out of the equation by pushing forward to settle outside the leader.
The expected mid-race slowdown never eventuated, with the field maintaining a genuine tempo throughout the middle stages. Travelling comfortably, Show'em Who's King found a lovely rhythm before circumstances made the task significantly more difficult approaching the home turn.
As the leader weakened before the bend, Show'em Who's King was left exposed earlier than ideal, effectively becoming a sitting duck from the 500-metre mark. Despite doing the hard work in front, he refused to give in.
When challenged late by the runner-up, the gelding showed tremendous courage, digging deep and putting his head down right where it mattered to hold on for a deserved victory.
While the race may not have been the deepest maiden on paper, Show'em Who's King displayed plenty of staying promise that should hold him in good stead as he continues to mature. Breaking through after four consistently competitive starts is a fitting reward for both the horse and his connections, and the perfect way to round out his first racing preparation!
Congratulations to Billy Slater and all of Show'em Who's King's owners and connections on a well-earned maiden victory. If today's result is any indication, Queensland supporters might be quietly hoping the winning feeling continues into Wednesday night's Origin decider.
