Kick On Charlie has wasted little time opening his winning account, producing a courageous performance to claim the 1400-metre Maiden Plate at Gatton on Friday, getting his nose down right on the line to secure his first career victory.
Having taken significant improvement from an encouraging debut performance, Charlie arrived at Gatton looking noticeably fitter, stronger and more furnished than we had seen him previously. It was pleasing to see that physical progression translate into a winning performance at just his second race start.
Despite drawing favourably, things didn't go entirely to plan through the early stages. With genuine tempo in the race, Charlie found himself travelling slightly outside his comfort zone, working to maintain his position throughout the first half of the contest.
For a young horse still learning his craft, it was a situation that could easily have compromised his finishing effort. However, as the field approached the home turn, Charlie began to find his rhythm, poking his nose between runners before knuckling down for a determined finish.
Under a strong ride from Danny Peisley, he sustained his effort all the way to the winning post, showing plenty of grit to get his nose in front when it mattered most.
While he still showed signs of immaturity, wanting to lay out slightly under pressure, his willingness to fight right to the line was particularly encouraging.
For our team, it was a satisfying result and another positive step in Charlie's development. Although the opposition may not have been the strongest he will encounter throughout his career, the determination he displayed to overcome an awkward run and secure victory was certainly worth celebrating.
With just two career starts under his belt, Charlie remains a work in progress, both physically and mentally, and we are confident there is further improvement to come as he gains valuable racing experience.
Congratulations to all connections of Kick On Charlie on a well-deserved maiden victory. We look forward to watching him continue to develop and build on this promising start to his racing career!
